General Information about Scheduled tribes and Scheduled Areas of Chhattisgarh
- There are 146 Development Blocks in the State out of which 85 Blocks are Tribal Development Blocks.
- There are 11 Lok Sabha Constituencies in Chhattisgarh out of which 4 are reserved for Scheduled Tribes and 1 is reserved for Scheduled Castes.
- There are 90 Vidhan Sabha Constituencies in Chhattisgarh out of which 29 are reserved for Scheduled tribes and 10 for Scheduled castes.
- Area of Chhattisgarh is 1,35,133 square Kilometers. 81,861.88 square kilometers area is notified as Scheduled area, which is 60.58% of the total area of the State. It covers 19 districts (13 full and 06 partial).
- The total Scheduled tribe population of the State (Census 2011) is 78.22 lakh. The Total population of scheduled area as per census 2011 is 102.79 lakh in which Scheduled Tribe population is 58.69 lakh (57.09%). Entire Scheduled area of the State is covered by Tribal sub-plan.
- The development of Scheduled Tribes is being done as per the concept of tribal sub-plan in the state. The main tribe of Chhattisgarh is Gond. Its different sub-tribes are Maria, Muria, Dorla etc. Other tribes are Uroan, Kanwar, Binjhwar, Baiga, Bhatra, Kamar, Halba, Swara, nagesia, Manjhwar, Kharia and Dhanwar. The entire tribal sub-plan area is divided for administrative purposes into 19 Integrated Tribal Projects, 9 MADA pockets and 2 small regions. 24 districts (13 full and 11 partial) are covered by tribal sub-plan. 85 tribal development blocks and 27 community development blocks partially are covered in tribal sub-plan.
- There are 5 Primitive Tribes in Chhattisgarh – Baiga, Kamar, Pahari Korba, Birhor and Abujhmaria. According to the baseline survey done in the year 2005-06 their population is 1.55 lakh.
- 6 Primitive Tribe Development Agencies and 9 cells have been established in the State for development of Primitive Tribes. In 2002-03 The State Government has considered Pando and Bhunjia to be equivalent of primitive tribes and established separate development agencies for them – in Surajpur district for Pando and in Gariyaband District for Bhunjia.
